Poker Room makes it easy to play online poker on your Mac, and you don't even have to download any special software. Just go to the PokerRoom website and sign up for a free account, then launch the "Play Light Games" link found on the games page. The software can take a little while to load up sometimes, but has never taken more than a few minutes on my Mac. Once it's up and running it's just a matter of picking which table you want to sit at!
|
They will start you with $1000 worth of chips (play money), so find a table to sit at and prepare for some action! Choosing an online poker table out of the sea of options can be daunting the first time, with different blind sizes, different table sizes, and different numbers of players. You should try sitting at different types of tables so you can get a feel for what you're good at. If your play money account goes broke, you can easily reload it and try again! Keep doing so until you feel comfortable enough to move up to the cash games. If you're ready for more of a rush than the play money offers, deposit some cash and head to the real money tables! Check out our article on playing poker for real money on your Mac.

If you want to play Texas Hold'Em on your Mac, Poker Room is definitely one of the easiest spots to get started. They have play money tables, cash game tables, "sit-n-go" tables, and huge tournaments involving hundreds if not thousands of players. You can chose from No Limit, Pot Limit, and Fixed Limit.

The tables at PokerRoom look like this |
Poker Room's online Hold'Em tournament selection is top notch. Mind you, almost all of these large multi table tournaments are going to be for real cash. Only a few times per day is a "freeroll" offered. PokerRoom's tournament buy-in's start at $1 and go all the way up to $1000. Prepare to set aside a couple of hours for most multi-table tournaments, because it'll take a while to eliminate your competition and make it to the top! However, the first time you make it to the money in a big tournament is a very satisfying feeling! Tournaments are a great way to win big without risking too much. Then again, if you don't have a couple of hours to give away to a multi-table tournament, try a "sit-n-go" single table tournament!
Poker Room always has a big selection of sit-n-go tournaments running. The lowest buy-in stakes start at $5, and the highest is currently offered is $200. For these tables everyone buys in before any action starts, and then everyone at the table will start with the same amount of chips and you play until somebody wins it all. Almost all sit-n-go's are No Limit, so there's usually a lot of action! Typically the top 3 finishers on a 10-person table will get paid. PokerRoom also offers 5-seat sit-n-go's with the same buy-in amounts as the 10-seaters, but here only the top 2 get paid. Sit-n-go's are a great way to get the experience of No Limit tournament poker without committing to the long hours that a multi-table tournament would take. Each 10-seat sit-n-go usually lasts under an hour. The 5-seaters typically last around 20 minutes. Of course there are going to be faster and slower games, but those are the rough guidelines that I go by. When I have about an hour to kill, I'll sit down at a 10-seat sit-n-go and hope to win the table and make some decent money!
